A story of a boy who wants to make Korean a world language

Hi there! If you're reading this, you must be interested in learning the Korean language.

This story is written to help you to understand better about your potential instructor.

Before I was born, my dad was running a landscape business. One day, he hired a lady who didn't have a car to drive to the work place.

He offered his kindness to pick her up every single day. But whenever he drove, she just fell asleep.

"That's how I met your mom." - he said. Couple years later, I was born.
I was born in Daegu, South Korea on October 31, 1994. As a honeymoon baby, I became the first child of my family.

I was kind of a kid who would run an election campaign to be a president of the middle school - which I actually did.

Teachers and classmates LOVED me. Well, who wouldn't love a kind, happy, and smiling kid?
But something happened and the smile on my face had completely gone for a while.

It was a military service. As a duty of Korean men, I worked at the republic of Korean air force for 2 years.

It was brutal. I got bullied by my seniors and the hierarchical system of Korean military took away my happiness day by day.
Now that I'm looking back though, those painful days were one of the best things that happened to me.

It drove me to study abroad in United States, to spend time searching for what I truly care, and to follow the passion that I discovered.

And among those experiences, the highlight was definitely this:
It was March 14, 2019, sunny and lovely day. When a boy living at a peaceful town called Gayang in Seoul, South Korea, uploaded his very first video content that teaches about the Korean language on his newly created Instagram account: Koreanhoon.

Yeah, that's right. You guessed it correctly.

That's how I met my love - Korean language learners.
Ever since then, I've spent most of my time to serve Korean language learners around the world.

I love them because of their pure passion toward a foreign culture. They're generally kind, patient, and lovely people.

Now, my dream is to make Korean a world language by creating a streamlined learning experience which will be enjoyed by billions of people.
Hopefully you've gotten a good sense of why I'm teaching Korean and where I'm heading to.

Deciding to start learning a new language is not easy. But I did my best to make it as easy and as seamless as possible.

Hope to see you in my classroom.

See you soon!

Can I meet you in my classroom?

At first, I tried learning Korean on my own using a textbook, but it didn't work well for me. I had to learn too many words at once, and memorizing long lists of words and phrases from a textbook is not fun, so I wasn't motivated enough to keep up with it. What I loved about Expression1 was that each lesson was presented in a short segment. It was easy to learn something new every day without feeling overwhelmed. I had so much fun the entire time! Ryan is funny, energetic, and has an amazing smile! I always felt happier after watching one of his videos.

Again, this is a late post (about a month ago I took this challenge.) At first, it was quite difficult to learn a whole new alphabet. There are many sounds and letters that are different than English or Spanish. However, Ryn, Mia and the whole Hoonie community made were very encouraging about not giving up. They made it so fun! I love this Hoonie community so much; that I completed a second course Expressions 1 and now signed up for a 3rd challenge!

So fun! It's challenging for sure but I enjoy the challenge and you never feel like it's something you can't achieve. Plus the plot is entertaining haha

It helped getting a better aspect of using formal and causal speech, since one mostly hears one form being used by both persons and usually not both at the same time.

Expressions 2 has been the most interesting for me so far. It has not been easy, but through Ryan, l look forward to it everyday! I have so much enjoyed uploading videos of myself having a pretend conversation with myself. I laugh and sometimes l cringe at these videos, but also have learnt a lot from them as l can see where l make mistakes of pronouncing and intonation of words. My teacher Ryan has made this a fun experience and l love it.
